Diarrhea in Dogs: Home Care and When to Call the Vet

Dog being examined by a veterinary team on an exam table

Almost every dog has diarrhea at some point. Often it’s from eating something they shouldn’t, and it clears up in a day or two. But diarrhea can also signal infection, parasites or serious disease. Here’s how to handle diarrhea in dogs at home and when to call your vet.

Quick Answer: Mild diarrhea in an adult dog that’s otherwise bright, eating and drinking can often be managed at home with plenty of water and a bland diet for a day or two. Call your vet if diarrhea lasts more than 24 to 48 hours, contains blood, comes with vomiting, lethargy or not eating, or if your dog is a puppy, senior or has health problems.

Common Causes of Diarrhea

CauseExamples
Dietary indiscretionGarbage, table scraps, spoiled food
Sudden diet changeSwitching foods too quickly
StressBoarding, travel, new environments (“stress colitis”)
ParasitesGiardia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia
Viral infectionsParvovirus, especially in puppies
Bacterial infectionsSalmonella, Clostridium
Food allergies or intolerancesChronic or recurring diarrhea
ToxinsCertain foods, plants or chemicals. See foods toxic to dogs.
MedicationsAntibiotics and others
Chronic diseasesInflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease

VCA Animal Hospitals notes that most cases of sudden diarrhea are mild, but some need prompt care.

Small Bowel vs. Large Bowel Diarrhea

Small bowelLarge bowel
Large amounts of stoolSmall amounts, frequent
Weight loss possibleMucus or fresh blood
Normal frequencyStraining and urgency

This helps your vet narrow down causes.

Home Care for Mild Diarrhea

If your adult dog is otherwise acting normal:

  1. Keep water available at all times.
  2. Feed a bland diet for 1 to 3 days, such as plain boiled chicken (skinless, boneless) and white rice, in small, frequent meals.
  3. Add plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling) for fiber, if your vet agrees.
  4. Consider a vet-recommended probiotic.
  5. Gradually return to the regular diet over a few days.

Don’t give human anti-diarrhea medications without asking your vet. Some can be dangerous for dogs, especially certain breeds or dogs with toxin exposure.

Many vets no longer recommend withholding food for long periods. Ask your vet what’s best for your dog.

When to Call Your Vet

Get emergency care if your dog:

  • Has bloody or black, tarry stool
  • Is vomiting repeatedly
  • Is lethargic, weak or collapsed
  • Has a swollen or painful belly
  • Is a puppy with diarrhea, especially if unvaccinated (parvovirus risk)
  • May have eaten a toxin

Call your vet if:

  • Diarrhea lasts more than 24 to 48 hours
  • Your dog isn’t eating
  • Your dog is a senior or has health conditions
  • Diarrhea keeps coming back

Signs of Dehydration

Preventing Diarrhea

  • Change foods gradually over 7 to 10 days.
  • Avoid table scraps.
  • Secure trash cans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give my dog rice for diarrhea?

Plain white rice with boiled chicken is a common bland diet. Ask your vet if it’s right for your dog.

Is yellow diarrhea serious?

Color alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Watch for other symptoms and contact your vet if concerned.

How long does diarrhea last in dogs?

Mild cases often clear within 1 to 3 days.

Can stress cause diarrhea?

Yes. Stress colitis is common after boarding or travel.

Is mucus in dog poop normal?

Small amounts can be normal. Large amounts, especially with blood, suggest large bowel inflammation.

Should I collect a stool sample?

Yes. A fresh sample helps your vet test for parasites and infections.

Can probiotics help?

Some probiotics designed for dogs can help shorten mild diarrhea. Ask your vet which product to use.

Can puppies have a bland diet?

Puppies can become dehydrated fast. Call your vet before treating a puppy at home.
