Stuck Shed in Geckos: How to Help Safely

Gecko close-up on a textured stone surface

Geckos shed their skin regularly as they grow. Usually they peel it off and eat it within a few hours. But sometimes patches get stuck, especially on the toes, tail tip and around the eyes. Left alone, stuck shed can cut off circulation. Here’s how to help with stuck shed in geckos safely.

Quick Answer: Stuck shed (dysecdysis) is usually caused by low humidity, dehydration or a missing humid hide. Help by providing a humid hide, then giving a short soak in shallow warm water and gently rolling off loosened skin with a damp cotton swab. Never pull dry skin. See a vet if shed is stuck on the eyes or if toes or the tail tip look dark or swollen.

How Often Do Geckos Shed?

AgeTypical shedding frequency
JuvenilesEvery 1–2 weeks
AdultsAbout every 4–8 weeks

Before a shed, many geckos turn pale or grayish. They often hide more and may eat less.

Why Shed Gets Stuck

  • Low humidity in the enclosure
  • No humid hide for leopard geckos
  • Dehydration
  • Poor nutrition or underlying illness
  • Rough or missing surfaces to rub against
  • Injury or old scars

The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that shedding problems in reptiles are often linked to husbandry issues like humidity and hydration.

Where Stuck Shed Is Most Dangerous

Toes

Rings of old skin can tighten around toes and cut off blood flow. Toes can turn dark and eventually fall off.

Tail tip

Similar to toes, stuck shed can constrict the tail.

Eyes and eyelids

Leopard geckos have eyelids, and retained skin around the eyes can cause irritation or infection. This needs a vet.

Crested and day geckos

These species lick their eyes to clean them and need proper humidity for their skin and toe pads.

How to Help a Gecko With Stuck Shed

Step 1: Increase humidity

Add a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss or paper towel. For leopard geckos, keep the humid hide damp but not soaking. For crested geckos, mist the enclosure more often.

Step 2: Give a warm soak

  1. Fill a small container with warm (not hot) water about 80–85°F (27–29°C).
  2. The water should be shallow, below your gecko’s chin, just covering the legs.
  3. Let your gecko soak for 10 to 15 minutes, supervising the whole time.
  4. Cover the container partly to keep humidity in.

Step 3: Gently remove loose skin

Use a damp cotton swab and roll it gently along the toes or tail in the direction of the skin. Stop if the skin doesn’t come off easily.

Step 4: Repeat if needed

Repeat the soak once a day for a few days until the skin comes off.

Never pull or peel dry, attached skin. You can tear healthy skin or damage toes.

The damp paper towel “sauna”

Another option is to place your gecko in a small container lined with warm, damp paper towels, with air holes, for 15 to 20 minutes. The humidity loosens skin.

Humidity Targets

SpeciesTypical humidity
Leopard geckoAbout 30–40% overall, with a humid hide
Crested geckoAbout 50–70%, with higher spikes after misting
Gargoyle geckoAbout 50–70%
Tokay geckoAbout 60–80%

Use a digital hygrometer to check humidity. See our leopard gecko care sheet and crested vs. leopard geckos for setup details.

Preventing Stuck Shed

  • Always provide a humid hide for leopard geckos.
  • Mist crested and tropical geckos regularly.
  • Provide fresh water daily.
  • Add rough surfaces like cork bark and rocks.
  • Feed a balanced, dusted diet.
  • Check toes and tail after each shed.

When to Call Your Vet

See a reptile vet if:

  • Shed is stuck around the eyes
  • Toes or the tail tip look dark, swollen or dry
  • Your gecko has repeated bad sheds
  • Shedding problems come with weight loss or lethargy

Frequent bad sheds can signal an underlying health or husbandry problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for my gecko to eat its shed?

Yes. Many geckos eat their shed to recycle nutrients and hide their scent from predators.

Can I use oil to help remove stuck shed?

Avoid oils and lotions unless your vet recommends a specific product. Warm water and humidity are safest.

Will lost toes grow back?

No. Geckos can regrow tails, but not toes. That’s why it’s important to deal with stuck toe shed quickly.

My gecko is pale and not eating. Is it sick?

It may be about to shed. If it doesn’t shed within a week or two, or seems weak, see a vet.

How long does a gecko take to finish shedding?

Most geckos finish within a few hours to a day once the skin starts to lift.
